MadeWithLove Infolettre mai 2012 / newsletter

** english message follows **

From working with many of them on a regular basis, I can say that in addition to being extremely supportive, brand ambassadors and managers are as passionate as the bartenders themselves. They are also a crucial part of the success and momentum behind MadeWithLove.

Below is an extract from our very first newsletter that was released two years ago. This passage stated our values back then, and remains extremely relevant today:

”At MADE WITH LOVE, we are constantly searching for passionate people to whom excellence is a standard and extravagance is a pleasure – people who fully assume the responsibility of being part of a community by identifying with and promoting it. No matter what their passion is, such a person can be recognized simply by the look in their eyes, the tone of their voice, and the number of times they laugh in a day. Our quest gave rise to a passionate project that allows us to surpass ourselves, to be more creative than ever and to be part of a community that is constantly growing!”

Cheers,

Meet our judges! Number 5 : Dave Mitton

Jean-Sébastien Mercier (MWL) – Dave, tell us what your background is in bartending?

(Dave Mitton) – I’ve been working in the restaurant industry for the past fifteen years. My first job was a bathroom attendant in Beverly Hill’s California where I worked under the table for tips. After a very short stint of bathroom duty and too long of a story to get into I found myself working personal security for different celebrities on a nightly basis at a club in L.A.
Somehow I found my way behind the wood and felt in love with it, I then spent the next five years globe trotting and working in many bars along the way. For the most part I found myself working in cocktail bars but I found myself working at some saloons, taverns and clubs as well. I always felt more at home working in the smaller “gin joints” you could say.
I arrived in Toronto in 2001 and with a friend we opened up a spot called Czehoski on Queen Street West, then years later headed north with a couple friends and created The Harbord Room, my current home away from home where you can find me behind the wood most nights of the week.

I love entertaining people, constantly learning about new wines and beer.
Obviously I have a special place in my heart for the art of the cocktail. At The Harbord Room we explore age old cocktails from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when some of the most treasured cocktails were first created.

(MWL) – What’s your experience with MadeWithLove?

(Dave) – I met Pierre Oliver Trempe a few years back when he was planning the first Made With Love here in Toronto, we had a few mutual friends in Montreal and ended up having coffee one day here in Toronto. Once he explained the concept of Made With Love I was on board and I tried to help get the ball rolling with bringing together different bartenders and mixologists for the first Toronto event. I was one of the competitors that evening who got his ass kicked by Nish from Blowfish.

(MWL) – What are you expecting for the event in Toronto March 26th?

(Dave) – Over the last 14 months here in Toronto the cocktail scene has been exploding, I think we are going to see a very large turn out of people coming down to try some libations.

(MWL) – As a judge of MadeWithLove Toronto 2012, what would you say to the competitors before the event?

(Dave) – Have fun! That’s what this is all about, it’s not about winning. It’s about seeing what your peers and friends are up to. At the end of the day you shouldn’t have to think about why something is good. We all drink to relax, to bond, and for the social aspect of it.

This is what concludes our interviews with our judges. Again, a big thank you to all of them to be part of this adventure that we love so much!

We hope you got to know more about all of them and enjoyed the interviews! Looking forward to see you on March 26th at the Fermenting Cellar in the Distillery District!

Cheers!

Meet our judges! Number 4 : Kevin Brauch

Jean-Sébastien Mercier (MWL) – Kevin, tell us what your background is in bartending and mixology?

Kevin Brauch – I have over a decade of restaurant and bar experience, beginning in the kitchen and realizing my full potential behind the bar! I’ve been a cocktail judge of more than 40 competitions around the world involving all major spirit companies and representing USBG, IBA, FBA and CPBA mixologists. Also, I am host and writer of The Thirsty Traveler, a 60 episode television series for Food Network, aired in more than 80 countries.

(MWL) – What’s your experience with MadeWithLove?

(Kevin) – In 2011, I was the master of ceremonies and judge at the Toronto edition and judge at the Montreal edition. Now i’m looking forward to be the MC and judge of the one coming in Toronto on the 26th of March at the Fermenting Cellar in the Distillery District!

(MWL) – What are you expecting for the event in Toronto March 26th?

(Kevin) – First of all, I expect a great night celebrating the art of mixology from some of the city’s best mixologists. Hopefully, and quite possibly, the greatest (and toughest) cocktail competition we’ve ever seen in Toronto! It should be one of the largest and most talented group of mixologists assembled for a ‘friendly and fun’ opportunity at cocktail supremacy.

(MWL) – Last question Kevin, as a judge of MadeWithLove Toronto 2012, what would you say to the competitors before the event?

As MWL is always a jam-packed affair I would hope the cocktail creations being presented will not be as difficult or time consuming to create, that it slows a mixologist down to the point that it will affect their performance. The two categories, Judges & People’s Choice, mean the mixologists have to concentrate fully on cocktail execution while doing what good bartenders and mixologists should always do: engage the customer and provide the perfect overall cocktail experience.

Meet our judges! Number 3: Priya Shah

Jean-Sébastien Mercier (MWL) 1- Priya, tell us what is your background in bartending/mixology so far?

Priya ( PMA Canada) I started in the industry when I was 18, (over 10 years ago!! :O) as a cocktail waitress/bartender at The Docks! From then on, it was History! I bartended all throughout University in London Ontario at some infamous locations, and then on to a number of places in NYC. I then made the jump to the other side of the bar, managing events and sponsorships for a beverage alcohol distribution company: PMA Canada. We represent many prominent brands like Skyy Vodka, Campari and Hendricks Gin to name a few!

(MWL) 2- What is your experience with MWL so far?

(Priya) This is actually my 4th time judging and my 5th MWL event attended. Each one is different from the last and that is what I love about it! Each mixologist’s creations are wildly diverse and equally imaginative! I’m always pleasantly surprised at the unique ideas and passion behind the competitors and their cocktails. Never have I seen repeat ideas or tastes; these mixologists take these spirits and skilfully enhance their flavours, aromas and even textures to produce the most original concoctions! That, is what I look forward to!

(MWL) 3- What are your expectations for the upcoming edition of MWL in TO?

(Priya) Toronto is actually the one city I haven’t experience a MWL from yet, and it is my home city so I am extra excited to see what the local talent comes up with! I am familiar with many of the competitors and/or their place of work, and many are at the fore front of the cocktail culture that is taking over! Therefore, I have high expectations for their creativity! I’m curious to see if Torontonians want to get all ‘molecular’ like they did in Quebec City or if they prefer to keep it clean with pure spirits and simple mixes, like they did in Vancouver!

(MWL) 4- Last question, as a judge, what would you recommend to the bartenders in competition?

(Priya) My advice, or simple reminder: personality counts!! I don’t just want to try your cocktail, I want to feel your love for creating it. I want to know your name, and why you picked the spirit you did. Any additional flare or charisma (without it becoming unnatural) is always welcome! The competitors that have stuck out for me, have always taken that extra second to introduce themselves, look me in the eye and have a general “chatty charm” while making their cocktail. After all, they are on display! The whole experience should be enjoyable to watch, hear AND taste!

Meet our judges : Number 2 Matt Jones

JS Mercier (MadeWithLove):

Matt, Tell us what your background is so far?

Matt Jones (Whisky Ambassador – Bourbon at Beam Global):
I have been teaching, tending, and performing on stage and behind the wood on 3 continents for the better part of 13 years. My roots are in classic spirit forward cocktails, while I enjoy seeing service delivered with individual style and panache!

What’s your experience with MadeWithLove?

Matt: Having attended and supported MWL nationally across Canada for the past 2 seasons, I believe this contest breaks the mold. The MWL concept has kept the format relevant by including the whole cocktail community to showcase not only the show and the spirits, but the venue in which it was created and personalities behind the creativity. My favorite Canadian national competition!

What are you expecting for the event in Toronto March 26th?

Matt: With the excellent choice of venue in the heart of Toronto’s Distillery District, I believe MWL Toronto will attract new attendees that are much more discerning cocktail enthusiasts than ever before, while expanding the cult following of the bartender/mixologist personalities in this wonderful city! This is after all what it is all about – community!

As a judge of MadeWithLove Toronto 2012, what would you say to the competitors before the event?

Matt: The best advice I can give is to focus the majority of your energy on proper and adequate pre-preparation for your cocktail, and with all those bases covered, then put on your smile, practice your key messages, and ENJOY presenting at the show! Your recipe can not be influenced by that point, but your guests votes can. Be the best version of your professional bartender self as you can be and execute a great service! Believe in your creativity and above all have FUN!

Meet our judges : Number 1 Nishan Nepulongoda

Jean Sebastien Mercier (MadeWithLove):

Nishan, Tell us what your background as a mixologist is so far?

Nishan Nepulongoda (Judge at MadeWithLove Toronto 2012, Resident mixologist at Blowfish Restaurant on King Street):

I’ve started bartending in Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, in 1991 in the 5 stars hotel, Ramada Renaissance. I have worked there as a bartender for 6 years. This was my first real experience as a bartender. They taught me the entire classic cocktail base and showed me the basic techniques.

In 1997, I moved to Dubai and I started working as the head bartender at the Dubai Marine Beach Resort & Spa as a flair bartender and mixologist. I have worked in this 5 stars hotel for seven years and I developed my capacity to create cocktails and to balance flavors.

I moved to Toronto in 2004. I started my first job at the Miller Tavern along with Scott McMaster who will be competing this year at MadeWithLove.

In 2009, I won the Annual Belvedere Cocktail Competition and the Cointreau Cocktail competition.

In 2011, I have been part of the Barfellow Program at the Manhattan Cocktail Classic. I was also a guest mixologist at the 2012 edition of the Tales of the Cocktail Vancouver representing PMA.

In 2011 and 2012, I was guest mixologist invited by Marché International at the European Food Summit in Zurich.

JS: What’s your experience with MadeWithLove?

Nishan: My first experience was in March 2010. I participated at MadeWithLove Toronto at the Drake Hotel along with Gavin MacMillan, Dave Mitton, Scott McMaster, Rob Montgomery and 6 other mixologists. I won the public’s choice of the Toronto edition of MadeWithLove at Drake Hotel in 2010 and at Dolce Social Club in 2011.

After those wins, I got involved in the MadeWithLove Canadian Tour so I had the opportunity to travel and participate as a showcaser for PMA Canada in MadeWithLove Vancouver, Halifax, Montreal and twice in Quebec City. All these travels in only 8 months! I have judged 2 MadeWithLove events so far and participated as a showcaser or competitor to, let me think, 8 MadeWithLove events across Canada!

JS: What are you expecting for the event in Toronto March 26th?

Nishan: Like what I’m used to with MadeWithLove! There are always a lot of discoveries, and encounters. I know that MadeWithLove is always getting bigger and better and this event is attracting more and more media attention. It is a good opportunity to network.   Really, this is going to be a lot of fun for everybody: Competitors, guests and of course, for the judges!

JS: Last question. As a judge of MadeWithLove Toronto 2012, what would you say to the competitors before the event?

Nishan: Don’t forget the criteria on which the judges are judging: presentation, creativity and taste. Don’t forget that the public will be judging on a global experience which is more subjective… OR…forget it and have fun creating!

The Market Race Kick-Off Event!

On Monday, January 23rd was the first edition of the The Market Race Event which was held at The Marché in Toronto as a qualifier for the MadeWithLove competition coming up in March to be held at the Fermenting Cellar in the Distillery District. A total of 15 bartenders showed up for that amazing and crazy event. Aside from the bartenders, we were very pleased to see lots of people from the community and, last but not least, our judges!

We were lucky enough to have Kevin Brauch (Food Network) hosting the event, and what an amazing job he did! I have to mention that not only was he hosting, but he was also on the judges panel. You can imagine how busy he must have been, but oh so energetic!

As our main sponsor for this event, Hendrick’s Gin offered our competitors a gift bag including an amazing drink recipe book and gin Gimlets made with fresh herbs and their delicious gin to everyone attending!

Now, I guess you want to know what it was all about!? Each bartender had 20 minutes to race the market, find their ingredients with a restricted budget allowed (maximum of 6 ingredients) and come back to their bar and create the best cocktail and impress the judges. Each cocktail was judged on 3 points: presentation, taste and originality.

As for the ingredients they could go and get anything they wanted that was available in the market (juice, fruits, herbs, wine, syrup, etc.) Like I mentioned before, they were restricted to a maximum of 6 ingredients to add to the challenge. As for the spirits, they were allowed to choose within the followings: Hendrick’s Gin, Maker’s Mark Bourbon, Aperol Liqueur, Campari Liqueur, Appleton Estate Rum, Grant’s Scotch and Skyy Vodka.

The result were fantastic! We saw lots of creativity, great cocktails, and a really good show from the bartenders! They all managed to surprise us with what they came up with in only 20 minutes, and it was a lot of fun to see them running through the alley, looking for the freshest ingredients! Good times, great people and original cocktails, made with love!

We would like to thank The Marché for their generosity by providing the venue, the food, and their wonderful new bar that was just build up there! Also, a massive thank you to all the bartenders who participated, our sponsors, the media, the judges and the public! Next rendez-vous is on the 26th of March for the competition, stay tuned for more details!

Bartenders and their ranking:

First Place: Megan Jones – County General

Second Place: Joshua Oliver Prout – Boehmer

Third Place: Scott McMaster – Spin

4- Simon Hooper – Brassaii
5- Kathleen Shattock – The Fox/ Miller Tavern
6- Jeremy Janes – The Red Martini
7- Darryl McDonald – Raising The Bar
8- Jordan Stacey – Brassaii
9- Andre Atchison – E11even
10- Robin Wynne – Fynns Temple Bar

Cheers!

MadeWithLove Mixology competition heads up

HERE IS AN E-MAIL SENT BY ROBIN JAMES WYNNE.

Thanks man, what you expressed in that email in the reason why we do what we do…100%

______________________________________________________

«Greetings all!

I hate sending out mass emails, but in this case I’m going to make an exception.   So please read below as I’m sure if you’ve met me and seen how passionate I am about mixology, you’ll be interested in the information below.

Last year I was lucky enough to be invited to a mixology event called Made With Love.  Being invited last minute, I was able to fly in under the radar and be a virtual unknown in event!  Even in the cocktail/mixology scene in Toronto I had only done 1 competition previous, so this was an opportunity to showcase a budding passion.   I turned heads and got some great feedback from competitors and judges alike!

Needless to say, this was sort of a launching platform for me and allowed me to get some good PR in the city for making some inspired cocktails!  Since then I’ve entered a few competitions and done very well, which only fuels the passion to keep pushing the culture further at my bar, and that of other bartenders and culture in the city.  I’ve been blessed to have met so many of Toronto’s great bartenders, mixologists and enthusiasts alike.  I’ve also met some great reporters, bloggers, news crews, social media butterflies and the likes of which keep helping promote the stuff I do and that of other great mixologists too!    So I’m emailing you to let you know about this years Made With Love competitions, and preliminary competition.

Made with Love has been putting on some great events that have ballooned in size over the past 3 years to help promote cocktail culture, build relationships, and help promote a budding scene in every city that’s plays host to one of their events.   It’s a great opportunity for restaurant foodies and cocktail hounds to come out and enjoy one-of-a-kind creations, held in a beautiful environment, with a social atmosphere where having a cocktail and talking food and drink culture is celebrated!

The Made with Love crew are coming back to Toronto this coming Monday, January 23rd to host a preliminary qualifier round to get into the main Made with Love Toronto event to be held later in March.    The event has a cool twist that keeps the mixologists on their toes..   It’s a market race!    The event is being held at the Marche restaurant in the BCE place (yonge/wellington), so it’s got a market feel to it where mixologists are given a $30 budget and 20 minutes to shop, and come up with a cocktail that will hopefully get them into the final event in March!   Needless to say this will be a pressure cooker for the mixologists who have no idea what ingredients will be present, and the unexpected twists no doubt that will be thrown at them to make it even more challenging!!

While I competed in the main event last year, there are no guarantees I’ll make it into this years competition, so I’ll be feeling the pressure soon enough!!

So I’m sending this email to all the people who have supported me or I’ve met in the press, PR, marketing and cocktail industry to come out on Monday January 23rd at 2pm to see this event happening.   There is no charge to watch or support competitors, and there will be prizes and cocktails to be enjoyed at the event too!

If you want more information on the event, please feel free to email

info@enjoymadewithlove.com for details!»
